What is well-being? The dictionary will give definitions such as “a good or satisfactory condition of
existence; a state characterised by health, happiness and prosperity”. This definition is ok, but it
does not take into account individual differences in personality or the context in which it is used.
The term “well-being” has possibly been overused in the past which has led many to think of it as
rather an empty notion. An alternative term could be to consider “Quality of Life” when describing
how satisfied someone is with their life at that point in time. Whatever the term used, the important
point is to understand we each have our own perception of our position in life in the context of what
is going on at that specific time.
Life can throw a “curved ball” at the most unexpected (or inconvenient!) time and this can happen
regardless of what you do … elite athlete, business person or mother of three. For sports people
who spend much of their time practising and training, emotional well-being can sometimes become
overshadowed by the desire to progress. We are all individuals and therefore vary in our ability
to cope with stress and pressure. An understanding of how YOU maintain your own well-being is
therefore vital in ensuring the pressures in life do not become so huge that well-being begins to
suffer.
